Today's technology is becoming more robust by the minute. You can now triple your efficiency just by purchasing, installing and learning the latest software. Oh yeah - I forgot - you'll also have to configure, maintain and "get to know" your new software to ensure optimum productivity. Is this starting to sound like a book with endless chapters? Possibly. Does the rapid pace of changing technologies impact overall productivity in a positive or a negative light for the end user?

This question cannot be answered with a simple yes or no. Ultimately, it depends on the person using the software and the overall quality of work produced by the person. Quality of work is not defined by quantity or speed. It is defined by the amount of thought process put into the final product, often boiling down to that last "10%" that we are all guilty of avoiding at one time or another. As a web designer, there are two assets which directly affect client retention - Quality and consistency. Speed is a great asset, but it won't win you quality clients and is always up for negotiation anyway - The other two assets are not.

Staying on the leading edge of technology is also an important factor because it keeps you, the web designer, informed of the latest trends and possibilities available in the marketplace. Any product or service you choose to use should reflect your existing philosophy. Ever see a musical group follow that latest and greatest trend a little "too" closely? We all know these groups do not last very long because they are generally spending too much time worrying about what the market is saying, as opposed to producing excellent music.

The winner of the technology race will not be the web designer with the most toys in his/her repertoire. It will be the web designer that utilizes this technology to best leverage themselves to produce quality work in a consistent manner.

The tortoise "still" wins the race...
