Optevi Search is based out of Los Angeles, California. The engine traces its roots back to January, 2005, where it started as a series of inventions and designs by current President and Founder, Dan Abrams. Programmer Sami Vaaraniemi was soon brought onboard to develop working prototypes, and in August, 2005, patent applications were filed with the USPTO. After months of research, development and testing, Optevi Search was fired up live on January 29th, 2006. At the time this article was written, Optevi Search was in pre-beta phase. The company is in the process of filing more patent pending technologies.

Optevi Search is a Meta search engine of sorts, with an interface that can potentially gather data from any existing search engine. Currently, MSN Web Search provides Optevi with its main results.

It offers a unique personalized approach to search by using a Search Engine Interface Modifier (SEIM) that allows users to refine results as they see fit. Users can enter a query into the search bar, and then select an appropriate category, or “bundle,” to search under. This helps cut down on spam by bundling and returning information from relevant sites. For instance, entering ‘Lord of the Rings’ in the search bar, then selecting SciFi from the predefined bundle drop down menu, yields very relevant results about ‘Lord of the Rings” on the SERP. The main listings fall down the left hand side of the page, each with a title, website url, small descriptor, and a bundle link associated with the chosen topic. There are also thumbnail screens of each listing’s main landing page. Sponsored links are present, but are tucked neatly away at the right hand side of the page. Users also have the option of performing a search without selecting any of the bundles.
